Here is the first horse racing tip for betting claiming races, when it comes to successfully evaluating the horses in the race, look at the connections first. The connections, meaning the trainer, owner, and jockey, are the most important handicapping factor in claiming races. That means you handicap the race differently than a stakes race.
In most stakes races, the horses are fit and of good quality, the trainers are successful, and the horse’s past performance lines pretty much tell the whole story. That is why a higher percentage of favorites win stakes races than buying races. The wise handicapper looks at the numbers, speed, pace, breeding of the horses and finally, he or she considers who will train and ride the horse. The opposite is true when it comes to claiming races. While it is important to look at the past performances, as the old saying goes, believe half of what you see and none of what you hear. A trainer who is good at claiming horses and then winning is the whole key to success betting on cheap races, not what the horse has done in its last few races.
That means you have to be knowledgeable about trainer moves and follow them. If you know a particular trainer wins 50 percent of the time on his second race after the claim if the horse is 4 years old or older, then no matter how bad a horse looks on paper, if it is going off at good odds, it is a good bet.
Here is another good tip, if you know a trainer is good at the claiming game, don’t pay attention to the horse’s past lines. In fact, the worse the horse looks on paper, the better is for you because that will drive the odds up. The point is that the horse was chosen by that trainer and has been under his or her care, that should be enough for you to make your decision. In claiming races, it is all about the connections.
Therefore, if you are going to bet on them, learn all the trainer moves and keep a record of when they win
